Accounting, reporting and planning for your business.

Your business may need bookkeeping kept up to date, a financial movement explained, or a finance process made more reliable. The starting point is the work that needs attention—and what you need to receive from it.

ZEHN PARTNERS undertakes accounting, reporting, planning and finance-improvement assignments for business owners and finance leaders. Whether you manage the finances yourself or have an internal finance team, we can take on a recurring accounting cycle or a focused project. Before work begins, we agree the outputs, timing and decisions requiring your involvement.

The work your finance function needs

Some requirements concern keeping the records in order. Others concern understanding performance, planning commitments or changing how work moves through the business. The following capabilities can be commissioned individually or combined where the assignment calls for it.

Accounting & Closure

When transactions accumulate, reconciliations remain unfinished or month-end work competes with day-to-day demands, the immediate need is often to get the accounting completed properly.

We undertake bookkeeping and recurring accounting, reconcile balances, prepare accounting schedules and support month-end close. Coverage can focus on particular accounts, entities or stages of the close, with financial-statement preparation included where required and confirmed in the brief.

You receive updated records, supporting reconciliations and schedules, together with proposed adjustments and matters still requiring attention. These outputs give the business owner or finance lead a basis for reviewing balances and closing the period, with outstanding items identifiable. Accounting treatments and adjustments requiring approval are brought to the appropriate person before they are finalised.

Reporting & Analysis

Figures can be available without explaining what has changed. A useful report connects the financial movement to the underlying records and makes its significance understandable to the people reading it.

We prepare financial and management reporting, investigate movements and develop variance analysis and commentary from the available information. An assignment may examine a particular cost, margin or operating result, or establish a reporting pack with agreed comparisons and definitions.

The output can include reconciled reporting schedules, an analysis of contributing movements and commentary distinguishing supported findings from questions still open. This helps you identify which costs or activities need attention and what further information is needed before acting. Where the records do not establish a cause, that uncertainty remains explicit; management determines the action to take.

Planning & Forecasting

A plan is more useful when its assumptions can be examined and changed. We prepare budgets, financial plans and models that connect expected activity with its financial consequences.

An assignment can include scenario comparisons, sensitivity analysis or a forecast built around a particular planning decision. You receive the model, its key assumptions and an explanation of the changes that materially affect the result, so you can compare plans and see where they depend on uncertain volumes, prices or costs. Management confirms the planning basis and makes the commercial decisions.

Cash forecasting

For cash forecasting, we bring expected receipts, payment commitments and opening balances into an agreed horizon. The output shows projected cash positions and the effect of selected timing or activity assumptions, helping you assess commitments and potential funding needs. Receipt dates remain assumptions for management to confirm and monitor.

Controls, Processes & Systems

Repeated corrections, unclear approvals or inconsistent records may point to a process problem rather than a reporting problem. We examine the relevant finance workflow, document weaknesses and develop changes proportionate to the requirement.

Work may cover internal controls, responsibilities, approval steps, reconciliations or the movement of information between teams. Outputs can include a process assessment, control documentation and proposed workflows showing who performs, checks and approves the work. They give the business a practical basis for addressing gaps and avoiding ambiguity over approvals or follow-up. Management approves the changes and assigns the people who will operate them.

Finance Improvement & Implementation

Where practical implementation is required, the assignment can extend from recommendations to agreed process changes, supporting documentation and a handover to the people responsible for ongoing operation. The handover identifies what has changed, what remains to be completed and who will maintain the process.

Systems requirements, including Odoo or other ERP support, may form part of that work. Odoo/ERP implementation depends on specialist or partner delivery; we confirm the provider, delivery responsibilities and review arrangements before accepting the assignment.

Defined Finance Leadership Support

A business owner or finance leader may need oversight of a particular reporting cycle, coordination of a forecast or follow-through on an improvement programme.

We can undertake selected reporting oversight, forecast coordination, finance-process oversight and review of specified finance outputs. Management receives a reporting or action summary identifying matters needing a decision, the person taking the next step and outstanding actions. The assignment sets the escalation route and authority limits.

This support sits within agreed authority. Your business retains management decisions, approval powers and responsibility for running the finance function.

From a requirement to an agreed assignment

We begin with the purpose of the work and who will use the result. From there, we agree the entities, periods or processes covered, the deliverables, the information required and the timing. Preparation, checking and client approvals are allocated for the actual assignment, including any specialist involvement.

For recurring work, the agreement establishes a cycle: when information is supplied, when outputs are due and how outstanding matters carry into the next period. For a project, it establishes stages, completion criteria and the handover needed to continue the work internally.

Missing information and unresolved questions need an owner and a next step. We identify their effect on the output and agree how they will be addressed. ZEHN remains responsible for the work it undertakes, including appropriate checking and correction. Your business supplies the relevant records, confirms assumptions and policies, approves transactions and adjustments, and retains management authority.

When a financial movement needs explaining

Illustrative assignment — not a completed ZEHN client engagement.

Revenue has increased. Gross margin has fallen.

A business needs to understand why sales growth has not translated into a stronger gross margin. The assignment covers an agreed period and product grouping, with an analysis and explanation for management.

The information examined.

Sales records, quantities, selling prices, recorded costs and inventory movements provide the starting point. Accruals and relevant period-end adjustments are considered so that the analysis reflects recognised income and costs, rather than cash payments alone.

The work prepared.

ZEHN reconciles the analysis to the accounting records and separates the effects of selling prices, sales mix and recorded unit costs where the data permits. Checking would cover calculations and consistency with the supporting schedules, with the checker allocated before work begins.

What the evidence supports.

In this illustration, the records support a higher share of sales from lower-margin products. They also show an increase in recorded unit costs. The first finding helps explain the movement; the second still requires investigation into its underlying cause.

What remains unresolved.

Production information is incomplete. Lower utilisation or greater material consumption could contribute to higher costs, but neither is presented as an established explanation. The analysis identifies the missing records and the questions needed to test those possibilities.

What management receives.

A margin bridge, supporting schedules and commentary separating supported findings from unresolved explanations. Management supplies the remaining operational information and decides whether pricing, purchasing or production action is warranted. Any follow-up analysis is agreed against the outstanding questions.
